“Parenting without a sense of humor is like being an accountant who sucks at math.” ~ Amber Dusick — blogger

Kids’ egos are fragile.

It takes courage to laugh at yourself. When your kids hear you laugh at yourself and ironic situations, they’ll be empowered to laugh at their own bloopers. And when you laugh together it creates a shared memory that builds your relationship.

Laughter lightens the load.

The tween and teen years are full of stressful moments. Dr. Beerman, Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Psychology at the University of Innsbruck says “As a parent, we can show our kids that by laughing at ourselves it lightens the load, that not everything is critical. When they see us not taking everything so seriously they’re able to take the pressure of perfection off themselves as well. And that lowered stress and shared laughter make for a better relationship.”

Find humor in everyday situations.

When we share a laugh makes us feel good. And, the more laughter you share, the more you find to laugh about.

Here are three opportunities for a shared laugh:

  • personal bloopers — explain the situational humor and laugh together
  • memes and quirky short videos — exchange funny texts with your tween throughout the day
  • ironic situations in everyday life — point them out and share a laugh

Laugh with your tween today!
